Beta Is for Those Who Can't Just Pull Harder

Beta is a story other people tell about a sequence they needed. After the guidebook, pull.

Beta is a story a person tells about a sequence they needed because the direct way did not fit. Sometimes the story is useful, the way a weather report is useful, and sometimes it is a man describing his own limitations at the volume of a lecture. The coalition has a sorting rule. Where is the route. Has it been done. After that, pull.

The modern crag has a briefing culture. There is a video. There is a comment under the video. There is a person who was on it last week and would like to walk you through the left crimp, the right drop knee, and the moment where, if you are tall, you can skip the whole thing and still call it the same route. This is customer service. The rock is not a customer and neither are you.

Watch what beta does to a group. The first person tries the move. The second person explains the first person's body back to them. The third person offers a different explanation, which is the same explanation with a different hand. Nobody is stronger at the end of this. Everyone is more verbal. Verbal is not a grade.

The coalition's position is not that information is poison. A guidebook that says the crack is on the left, and that you should bring big gear, has done its job and should stop talking. A person who says trust me, use this foothold, I know your body, has started a different job, and it is not climbing. Your body is the only one on the holds. It will accept a sequence or it will not. If it will not, the traditional remedies are still available. Get stronger. Get meaner about your footwork. Come back when the friction is on your side. Do not come back with a better paragraph.

There is a panic in some climbers when they are not told what to do. The panic is the point. The few seconds before you invent the move yourself are the whole sport. Give those seconds away and you can still reach the top. You will have been a passenger. Passengers can ride with someone else.

If you are the one holding the beta, try a new discipline. Point at the start. Say the grade if you must. Then pick up your pack and go do your own climbing. The silence you leave behind is not cruelty. It is the route, returned to the person who came to do it.

If you are lost, look at the rock. It has been holding the answer in the open the entire time. The answer is often harder than you wanted. That is still an answer.
